It's always a right time. If you are in your first/second year find some internships on angel.co and apply. Doing an internship in first/second year is always a plus point. When you interview for internship in prefinal year/placement in final year, you have something to talk about from your previous internships and projects.

A lot of companies start their hiring process in month of Aug-Sept-Oct-Nov.

For instance In 2021,

Google started its off campus hiring for intern role (SE intern/AE intern) in August. Pro Tip - Apply via refferal to get interviews.

At the same time many companies started listing openings. Apply for all of them, they may take some time to revert back, but there is no harm in applying.

I am currently pursuing my B. Tech in Electrical stream and I am in my final year (2022 batch). I have written my GATE exam this year from Computer Science (CSE). So you all have got this answer that a student can write the GATE exam in any stream irrespective of his/her current branch.

But, you should keep some points in your mind before changing your stream:-

1) Start your preparation as soon as possible(at the starting of your third year or in the mid of your third year ) this is because you have to learn all the subjects from starting.

2) GATE has introduced that students in the 3rd year can give the GATE exam. So utilize this and try to analyze that are you able to crack the GATE exam with another stream or not in your third year.

3) Some IITs allow students to take a course in their respective branches. As an example, IIT Roorkee does not allow any non-cs degree holder to pursue M.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering. 

So, do research on these points before giving the GATE exam in a different stream.

Around 35+ companies have visited the campus this year (2021-2022) and the average Cost To Company (CTC) provided lies around 4.5 LPA. The highest CTC has reached upto 15 LPA which was offered by M/s Credflow. Only CS students were allowed to sit for Credflow. 

Maximum students got placed in Larsen and Toubro Technology Services (LTTS) whose package is 4.0 LPA and Larsen and Toubro Construction (L&T ECC) with 6.3 LPA.

DSA and development, both are important. Problem-solving enhances your logical skills and makes you a better programmer. In the development also, you have to solve problems, but here you will be solving some real-world problems by building projects. I would suggest that instead of considering DSA and development as separate things, consider them as a single entity as they both are an important part of your journey to become a software developer.


Now the question comes: can we study DSA and development together? There is not any particular answer to this question. Some people manage to do both on a daily basis, some people divide the days, for ex- 3 days development 3 days DSA in a week, so it varies according to people. But if you are just starting, it would be better if you give at least 3-3 months each to DSA and development, just to get the hang of both things. After that, you can figure out for yourself what works best for you. I would suggest starting with DSA and problem solving first as it is going to help you a lot in the development part, you tend to think about a solution and debug the code faster as you have already developed your logical skills through problem-solving and DSA.
